IBM and Qedma claim quantum advantage over classical supercomputers

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Qedma Quantum Computing announced results from a study they say demonstrates quantum advantage over classical simulation methods, including those run on Fugaku, one of the world's most powerful supercomputers.

Using IBM's quantum computers powered by the IBM Quantum Heron processor and Qedma's error mitigation software, QESEM, researchers observed quantum dynamics in systems of up to 74 qubits while modeling a two-dimensional Floquet Ising model. The companies said multiple classical simulation approaches, tested with RIKEN and BlueQubit, failed to produce consistent results at the scale reached by the quantum experiments.

The results were published as an arXiv pre-print and the quantum circuits were released publicly to the Quantum Advantage Tracker ahead of publication.

To validate the findings, the team benchmarked results against classical calculations where comparisons were possible, then extended to larger system sizes. Independent validation was also performed using trapped-ion hardware from Quantinuum, with consistent behavior observed across platforms.

"IBM quantum computers have reached a maturity where they can produce solutions that, for the first time, achieve both trust in the solution through extensive testing and outperform the best classical simulation methods," said Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research and IBM Fellow.

"For decades, quantum computing has promised discoveries beyond the reach of classical computers. Today, we're beginning to see that promise become reality," said Dr. Asif Sinay, CEO and co-founder of Qedma.

Qedma's QESEM software is available through the Qiskit Functions Catalog on the IBM Quantum Platform. The companies said the study marks the first time quantum advantage has been demonstrated using commercially available hardware and software for this class of physics problem.

IBM said additional quantum advantage demonstrations from partners across its ecosystem were also being announced on the same date.
