Alexandria Real Estate advances depression research initiative with FNIH

July 29, 2026 8:31 AM

Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. (NYSE: ARE) and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) announced that the Multi-Modal Assessment and Phenotyping in Depression (MAP-D) initiative has completed its design phase, according to a press release dated July 29, 2026.

The completion of the design phase establishes a scientific framework for a long-term clinical study aimed at identifying biological markers of major depressive disorder to support more personalized treatment approaches. The initiative is expected to exceed $70 million in total funding, beginning with a $22 million, three-year pilot phase.

Alexandria provided the initial funding for MAP-D and serves as the FNIH's founding strategic partner. The study will use artificial intelligence models to analyze relationships between biological markers and patient outcomes, with the goal of establishing biologically defined subtypes of depression.

"Major depressive disorder affects more than 21 million adults in the United States each year, nearly one-third of whom suffer from treatment-resistant depression," said Lynne Zydowsky, PhD, chief of science at Alexandria Real Estate Equities. "We are proud to partner with the FNIH to advance a transformative precision medicine framework that has the potential to fundamentally improve how depression is understood, diagnosed and treated."

The partnership also aims to make research data accessible to qualified researchers and extend its findings to other serious mental illnesses. In 2025, the FNIH awarded Alexandria the Charles A. Sanders, MD, Partnership Award for its contributions to the initiative.
