BorgWarner (NYSE: BWA) has been awarded a contract to supply its eTurbo electrically assisted turbocharger system to an unnamed major European automaker for a hybrid passenger car application, according to a company press release. Production is scheduled to begin in 2029.

The new program is based on BorgWarner's existing 400-volt eTurbo platform, which is already in series production. A key addition in this generation is remote power electronics, which allow flexible positioning within the vehicle and engine compartment. The system is rated for continuous electrical output of 20 kW and peak output of up to 30 kW, and is designed to operate at speeds of up to 145,000 rpm while withstanding exhaust gas temperatures above 1,000°C.

The eTurbo integrates a high-speed electric motor directly onto the turbo shaft to drive the compressor. Excess exhaust energy is converted into electrical energy and fed back into the vehicle's high-voltage system. The system uses silicon carbide-based power electronics and advanced cooling strategies.

BorgWarner states it is the only supplier offering a 400-volt eTurbo in series production. The company also noted the technology can assist automakers in meeting emissions standards including Euro 7, Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle, and China National 6b standards by eliminating fuel enrichment at high load and reducing exhaust backpressure.
