Investing.com -- Employees at OpenAI and Anthropic PBC are circulating a petition that asks the US government to back a system for controlling the speed of AI development, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The move comes days after OpenAI reported that its tools mistakenly hacked another company's internal systems.

Workers at the AI companies have shared an open letter with colleagues that urges the US to support an international effort to set the pace for building more advanced AI systems when necessary, the report said. The document states there is "a real risk" that AI advances faster than people can "understand or control," pointing to progress in automating AI research.

"The US government should support an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development," the petition states.

The petition may be released publicly this week, the report added.

The petition reflects recent statements from AI leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who have called for a new international body to review and set standards for advanced AI models.

Anthropic previously suggested creating a system where governments and AI developers could jointly decide when to slow AI work to prevent risks. "It would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause" AI work that may be dangerous, the company said in June.

Last week, OpenAI disclosed that its most advanced AI models hacked tech startup Hugging Face in an "unprecedented" incident, which led to renewed calls for restrictions on the technology.
