Workhorse Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: WKHS) announced plans to develop a containerized mobile AI data center product line, targeting what the company describes as a growing segment of mobile AI computing infrastructure.

The Detroit-based company said the product, currently in development, would be a turnkey, compute-ready containerized unit intended for distributed deployment applications. The initial design is expected to include liquid-to-liquid cooling, isolated server racks, a climate-controlled operator zone with two workstations, integrated uninterruptable power supply and battery backup, a fire suppression system, and support for multiple external power sources.

Workhorse said it plans to manufacture the product line at its existing plant in Union City, Indiana, drawing on engineering capabilities developed for its electric commercial vehicles. The company is targeting 2027 for the start of initial production and commercial deliveries.

According to Grand View Research, the global containerized data center market could reach $41 billion by 2031. Workhorse cited demand from sectors including telecom, banking, and IT, as well as edge computing and 5G deployment as factors driving the market.

The company said it plans a partnership-based go-to-market approach, working with data center developers who would handle market development and customer relationships.

"We believe this expansion into a new, growing segment is a strategic step that builds on the broader capabilities we now have as a result of the merger late last year," said Scott Griffith, CEO of Workhorse.

Workhorse also said it is continuing engineering and design work on its modular chassis and cab chassis commercial vehicle products, with production also expected to begin in late 2027. The company said it plans to provide further updates during its Q2 2026 earnings call scheduled for August 13, 2026.
