Ameren Missouri, a subsidiary of Ameren Corporation (NYSE: AEE), has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission (MoPSC) to build the West Alton Energy Center, a combined-cycle natural gas facility with a generating capacity of approximately 2,100 megawatts.

The proposed plant would be located adjacent to Ameren Missouri's existing Sioux Energy Center, allowing the company to use equipment and connections already on site. The project has an anticipated completion date of 2031, pending regulatory approval.

According to the company's filing, the facility is expected to support more than 1,000 construction jobs over several years.

"Projects such as the West Alton Energy Center are designed to perform under a wide range of conditions and periods of high demand," said Ajay Arora, executive vice president and chief growth and generation development officer at Ameren Missouri. "As our generation fleet evolves, this facility will add a highly efficient, Missouri-based resource that can operate 24/7 and work alongside our other resources to help maintain reliability for our customers."

The company stated that the project is included in its long-term energy planning process. Ameren Missouri also noted that a 2024 analysis by the State of Missouri found its proposed financing approach lowers project costs by millions of dollars compared to alternatives.

The application is subject to MoPSC review and approval before construction can proceed.
