Hamilton Lane (NASDAQ: HLNE) announced that its board of directors elected Michael Schmertzler as an independent director, effective July 22, 2026, according to a press release from the Conshohocken, Pa.-based firm.

Schmertzler becomes the fifth independent director on the board, joining three executive directors. He brings investment, corporate finance, and governance experience across both private and public sectors.

Schmertzler currently serves as chairman and director of PTC Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: PTCT), a biotechnology company focused on rare genetic disorder treatments. He also serves as chairman of Berryville Holdings and Dispel, LLC, and as executive chairman of SHY Therapeutics, in addition to serving as a director of AgNovos.

Earlier in his career, Schmertzler served as a managing director at Credit Suisse First Boston Equity Partners, L.P., including as chair of its investment committee from 1997 to 2014. He previously held senior roles at Morgan Stanley, including president of Morgan Stanley Leveraged Capital Funds. From 2012 to 2020, he served as a post-bankruptcy independent director of Lehman Commercial Paper, Inc.

Since 1998, Schmertzler has been a lecturer and adjunct professor at Yale University in the Department of Economics and School of Management, and previously served as a visiting professor at Yale-NUS College Singapore. He holds a B.A. from Yale College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
