Cigna Healthcare expands AI care management, targets $200M savings
Cigna Healthcare, the health benefits division of The Cigna Group (NYSE: CI), is expanding its care management programs using AI-enabled capabilities and predictive analytics, according to a company press release dated July 23, 2026.
The expansion is designed to reach 20% more customers with complex or chronic health needs, including those with cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, high-risk pregnancy, and behavioral health conditions. The company projects the initiative will reduce medical costs by $200 million over three years, or approximately $2,000 per year for each engaged customer.
More than 1,250 Cigna Healthcare clinicians, including nurses and behavioral health specialists, will support customers through the program. Engagement channels include phone, text, email, and digital tools.
The company cited several results from its existing care management programs, including a 42% reduction in avoidable inpatient stays among customers who engage early, and earlier identification of likely breast, colorectal, and lung cancer diagnoses by approximately 55, 46, and 37 days, respectively. The company also reported that 72% of customers connected to behavioral health providers achieved clinically meaningful improvement in depression symptoms.
"By combining predictive analytics, AI-enabled capabilities, and clinical expertise, we can identify health needs earlier and connect more customers with personalized support when it has the greatest impact," said Bryan Holgerson, President of Cigna Healthcare U.S. and Executive Vice President, Customer Health Outcomes, The Cigna Group.
The program expansion includes three components: earlier identification of health needs through predictive models, more personalized customer engagement, and increased access to clinical support by directing clinician time toward higher-priority cases.
