Lockheed Martin and Venus Aerospace sign propulsion deal

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Venus Aerospace announced a joint technology development agreement to evaluate Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) technology for long-range precision fires applications, according to a press release issued July 21, 2026.

The agreement aims to move RDRE technology from flight demonstration toward potential integration into missile systems. Venus Aerospace claims to have completed the first U.S. flight test of an RDRE.

Unlike conventional rocket engines, which rely on subsonic combustion, RDREs generate thrust through continuously traveling detonation waves. The companies said this approach has the potential to improve propulsion efficiency and reduce mechanical complexity.

Under the agreement, Lockheed Martin will assess how RDRE technology could be applied within operational military requirements, with a focus on range, speed, and compatibility with scalable production needs.

Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said the collaboration is intended to evaluate how the propulsion technology can be integrated into future precision fires solutions.

Sassie Duggleby, co-founder and CEO of Venus Aerospace, said the agreement moves the company's RDRE technology closer to practical precision fires applications, noting that defense customers are seeking performance gains beyond what legacy propulsion systems offer.

No financial terms of the agreement were disclosed.
