Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) announced that its APX NEXT XN P25 smart radio and XVN500 remote speaker microphone have become the first products in the industry to receive certification under the National Fire Protection Association's NFPA 1930 standard, according to a company press release.

The NFPA 1930 certification supersedes the previous NFPA 1802 standard and introduces updated software safety protocols, including flexible volume control, clearer diagnostics, and automatic audio battery alerts. Testing was overseen by the Safety Equipment Institute and included exposure to direct flame for 10 seconds, heat testing to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and drop testing from 9.8 feet.

The latest APX NEXT XN model adds low earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity alongside existing land mobile radio and broadband capabilities. According to the company, LEO satellite extends coverage to approximately 500,000 square miles of the U.S. not reachable by land-based cellular towers.

"Firefighters need communication tools that adapt as quickly as conditions change," said John Touvannas, vice president of Public Safety Devices at Motorola Solutions. "We're combining LMR, broadband and LEO satellite in the NFPA 1930-certified APX NEXT XN for a multi-layered network that extends voice and advanced data capabilities from dense urban centers to remote wildland terrains."

The radio also supports voice-enabled field applications, including SmartQuery, which allows access to agency policies via a voice-activated button, and SmartTranslate, which provides voice-to-voice translation in the field.

DuPage County in Illinois, which operates 64 fire stations with over 1,200 firefighters, is among the users of the device. "A durable and purpose-built radio is a firefighter's ultimate lifeline when conditions turn critical," said Linda Zerwin, executive director of the Emergency Telephone System Board of DuPage County.
