Chip stocks extend global rebound following last week's rout
Investing.com -- Global chip stocks staged a meaningful rebound on Tuesday, building on Monday’s recovery from last week’s broad selloff in the sector.
The rebound gathered pace overnight in Asia. In Taiwan, TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, gained 3.9%, while Foxconn Technology Group added 4.9% and chip designer MediaTek jumped 9.9%, driving the island’s benchmark Taiex up 4.2% and putting it on track for its best day since May.
South Korea’s Kospi rose 3.6%, led by memory-chip giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which climbed 6.2% and 4.1%, respectively. In Japan, Kioxia rallied over 17% and semiconductor-testing equipment maker Advantest rose 7.7%, while in Hong Kong, Chinese foundries SMIC and Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor surged 8.2% and 20%.
In the U.S., the recovery followed a volatile stretch for the sector. Micron, SanDisk and Seagate were among Monday’s top performers, a sharp reversal from Friday, when the same stocks posted double-digit losses.
Micron rallied a further 5.9% in Tuesday premarket trading by 05:45 ET (09:45 GMT), SanDisk jumped 7.7%, and Seagate gained 5%. Western Digital and Intel rose about 6% each, AMD climbed 4.2%, and Nvidia rose 1.1%. SK Hynix’s newly listed U.S. shares soared nearly 7%, as did Marvell Technology.
The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index had ended Friday more than 20% below its late-June record high, confirming a bear-market decline, before paring an intraday gain of nearly 4% to close Monday up a more modest 0.6%.
Elsewhere, European semiconductor giants ASML and ASM International gained about 3% each, BE Semiconductor jumped 4.4%, while Infineon Technologies rose 2.7%.
The rebound came even as Alibaba unveiled a new large-language model, Qwen3.8 Max, which it said trailed only Anthropic’s Fable 5 in capability, with 2.4 trillion parameters. Markets largely shrugged off the announcement, a contrast to Friday’s reaction to Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 model, which had triggered a global selloff in AI-linked stocks.
Investors are awaiting a heavy slate of earnings from major technology companies later in the week, with results due from Alphabet, Tesla and Intel among others.
