Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) completed what it claims is the first public electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) transition flight at the Farnborough International Airshow, according to a company press release.

Chief Test Pilot Simon Davies flew the company's full-scale prototype at 1:46 p.m. local time, transitioning from vertical take-off to wingborne cruise and back to vertical landing. The demonstration was conducted before an audience of aerospace industry representatives, regulators, and media.

Vertical also announced Sigma Air Mobility, an advanced air mobility operator and member of the Luxaviation Group, as a new customer. The company previously announced a strategic partnership with Near Earth Autonomy to integrate autonomous flight capability into its Valo aircraft.

Stuart Simpson, CEO of Vertical Aerospace, said: "Successfully demonstrating a public transition flight here is more than a technical milestone — it is proof that electric aviation is moving from promise to commercial reality."

Vertical's Valo is a piloted, four-passenger eVTOL aircraft. The company reports approximately 1,500 pre-orders from customers across four continents, including American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL, and Japan Airlines. The company is also developing a hybrid-electric variant of the aircraft.

Vertical plans additional flight demonstrations throughout the week at Farnborough, subject to approved flight conditions. A full-scale commercial model of Valo is on display at the show in Hall 4.
