Why Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 is actually bullish for memory stocks

July 20, 2026 6:55 AM

Investing.com -- The release of Kimi K3 by Chinese startup Moonshot AI has rattled markets and reignited comparisons to last year's DeepSeek moment, but beneath the surface volatility, the model's technical characteristics point to memory chip makers as a clear winner, according to Bloomberg.

Kimi K3, which Moonshot claims rivals top-tier offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic at a fraction of the cost, is said to feature 2.8 trillion parameters and a one-million-token context window.

According to Bloomberg, those specifications require far more memory capacity than earlier model generations, pointing to sustained demand in a market dominated by a handful of suppliers, including South Korea's SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.

Memory makers should still be in the best position among semiconductor names, given the limited number of suppliers, Stanley Tang, senior portfolio manager at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management, told Bloomberg.

Tang added that overall demand is unlikely to decline if models like Kimi become more popular, since wider adoption could accelerate the penetration of agentic AI.

The bullish read on memory extends to the broader infrastructure layer. Gary Tan, portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, told Bloomberg he expects "the biggest winners to remain the AI infrastructure layer," adding that China's push for open-source AI "will require greater computing resources and drive demand for the underlying hardware, particularly networking and memory."

The picture is less clear for high-end chip designers. Nvidia and AMD face renewed questions about their scarcity premium, while AI model developers face intensifying competition, with Alibaba and MiniMax both unveiling new models in Kimi K3's wake, Bloomberg reported.
