Lockheed Martin unveils airborne counter-drone system MORFIUS X-Rotor
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has introduced the MORFIUS X-Rotor, an airborne High Power Microwave (HPM) counter-drone system the company says can neutralize more than 50 enemy drones in a single flight. The announcement was made at the Farnborough Airshow in England on July 20, 2026.
The system is designed for field recovery and reuse, and the company states it operates independently of dedicated sensors or specific command and control systems, unlike some other airborne counter-drone platforms. Lockheed Martin says MORFIUS does not require fire control radars to guide engagements.
Lockheed Martin said it is accelerating prototype production of MORFIUS and its HPM payload. The company has conducted flight, intercept, and lethality tests in Arizona, California, and Oklahoma, with additional flight tests planned.
According to the company, MORFIUS builds on earlier variants that have been in flight testing since 2017, using the same family of HPM effectors.
Randy Crites, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Advanced Programs, said the system delivers "a high kill rate while keeping the cost per kill low," and described it as "the most effective, low-cost solution on the market today."
The company stated the program supports the U.S. Department of Defense's 2025–2028 Rapid Response Counter-UAS Roadmap, according to the press release.
