Boeing, Lufthansa and Rolls-Royce to test fuel and noise tech
Boeing (NYSE: BA), Lufthansa and Rolls-Royce are set to conduct flight tests of technologies aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing aircraft noise, according to a press release from Boeing.
The tests will take place at Boeing's site in Glasgow, Montana, beginning later this month and are expected to run through mid-August. The aircraft used for the testing is a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, which is scheduled for delivery to Lufthansa at a later date.
Two technologies are being evaluated. The first is a Next Generation Inlet, a reduced-length engine inlet with acoustic treatments designed to reduce weight and drag while enabling integration of more fuel-efficient engines on future platforms. The second involves modified departure and arrival procedures, including algorithmically generated flight paths called Intelligent Operations, intended to reduce noise around airports while improving fuel efficiency.
The tests are part of Phase III of the Federal Aviation Administration's CLEEN (Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise) program, a public-private initiative to develop technologies for more fuel-efficient and quieter aircraft.
"These tests demonstrate how the public-private partnership of the CLEEN program supports the development and integration of advanced technologies into current and future aircraft," said Julie Marks, executive director of the FAA's Office of Environment and Energy.
The testing is conducted under Boeing's ecoDemonstrator Explorer program, which Boeing states has tested more than 260 technologies since its launch in 2012.
