Dell leads broader AI hardware selloff as shares tumble 14%

July 15, 2026 1:06 PM

Investing.com - Dell Technologies stock is trading down roughly 14% Wednesday, its steepest intraday drop in months, as a broad reversal sweeps through AI server hardware stocks and investors reassess whether stretched valuations can survive a more cautious macro backdrop. No confirmed can be attributed to Wednesday's move.

The selloff extends well beyond Dell. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is sliding roughly 8% and Super Micro Computer is off around 5%, confirming the move is concentrated in high-beta AI hardware names rather than broad technology. The Nasdaq-100 ETF (QQQ) is down about 1% on the session.

The selling follows a UBS downgrade to 'Neutral' from 'Buy' in the days preceding Wednesday's session. The bank flagged what it called an overheated valuation and capped upside potential. Dell had shed roughly 5.2% on the day of that call and slipped a further 1.3% the following session.

Even accounting for Wednesday's drop, Dell retains a year-to-date gain of over 200%. HPE is up about 90% over the same stretch. Dell surged on the back of a blowout Q1 FY2027 report on May 28, when revenue of $43.8 billion crushed the $34.81 billion consensus by more than 25% and EPS of $4.86 nearly doubled the $2.88 forecast, sending shares up roughly 38% that day alone.

But the bull narrative is now colliding with margin arithmetic. AI server gross margins have compressed to roughly 18%, stoking analyst concerns that Dell's pivot to high-velocity infrastructure builds is diluting overall corporate profitability even as backlog demand stays strong. Rising input costs for advanced semiconductors and specialized memory modules, intensifying competition among server manufacturers, and a more cautious Federal Reserve stance on rate cuts are cited as compounding headwinds for the near-term outlook.

The sentiment backdrop adds texture. A recent Bank of America survey found that a record 82% of respondents view the AI trade as the most crowded, though roughly half still say it does not constitute a bubble.

Micron and SanDisk also tumbled Wednesday alongside Dell as investors questioned how long red-hot demand could sustain elevated valuations. The synchronized move reinforces that the session's pressure reflects a sector-wide reassessment of AI hardware multiples rather than any company-specific news from Dell.

The next major reset will come on September 3, when Dell reports Q2 FY2027 results. Consensus currently sits at $4.86 in EPS and $44.23 billion in revenue, and analysts have logged 20 upward EPS revisions over the past 90 days heading into that print. Dell has also guided for $60 billion in AI server revenue for the full fiscal year. Whether management reaffirms that target or signals any demand softening will determine whether Wednesday's selloff proves to be a healthy consolidation or the beginning of a more sustained derating. At current prices, the stock remains well above its 52-week low of $110.22 but has pulled back meaningfully from its 52-week high of $469.47.
