Raytheon demonstrates next-gen short-range missile for U.S. Army

Raytheon, a business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), completed a system technology demonstration of its Next Generation Short Range Interceptor (NGSRI) at Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah, on July 15, 2026.

The test involved launching multiple guided missiles using the company's soldier-portable Command Launch Assembly (CLA). According to a press release from RTX, each launch resulted in a direct hit and destruction of Army-simulated aerial targets.

The NGSRI system uses precision optics in both the CLA and missile seeker, paired with a solid rocket motor manufactured by Northrop Grumman. Raytheon says these components extend the missile's engagement range beyond current systems.

Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, said the NGSRI "saw farther and locked faster" than the Stinger missile it is designed to replace, adding that the new system is "easier to build and field, resulting in a more capable, affordable and rapidly producible weapon."

The NGSRI is a U.S. Army program intended to replace the Stinger surface-to-air missile. The new missile is designed to be fired from either a vehicle or a shoulder-mounted launcher. Raytheon, which manufactures the existing Stinger missile and launchers, said it is working to ensure NGSRI is interoperable with both new and existing mounted platforms.

Over the past year, Raytheon conducted several company-funded tests in addition to two incremental demonstrations under Army contract. The NGSRI is intended for use by both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.
