Investing.com -- Foreign investors purchased a net $132 billion of U.S. securities in May, the Treasury Department reported Tuesday in its monthly Treasury International Capital report.

The net inflow pushed total long-term purchases by foreign investors to $1.33 trillion over the past 12 months, according to Treasury data.

Foreign buyers acquired $134 billion of U.S. equities during May, bringing net foreign purchases in the equity sector to $909 billion over the past year.

Foreign residents reduced their holdings of U.S. Treasury bills by $43.5 billion during the month, the report showed.

Net purchases of longer-term Treasury securities reached $56.6 billion in May, with total longer-term Treasury purchases over the past 12 months at $290 billion, the Treasury Department said.

Overseas buyers purchased $52.5 billion of corporate bonds during the month, bringing total corporate bond purchases to $449 billion over the past year, according to the report.
