Investing.com -- US President Donald Trump announced he will grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot missile interceptors during the NATO summit in Turkey. Trump made the statement while meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"We're going to be giving a license to you," Trump said. "We'll show them how to do it."

Ukraine has requested additional Patriot missiles as the country enters its fifth year of war with Russia. Global stockpiles of the air defense system have decreased, and the US remains the only country that produces Patriots. This shortage led Kyiv to request permission for local production.

Trump indicated that production could start in the near future, with US manufacturers traveling to Ukraine to provide technical guidance.

"I think they can produce them pretty quickly," Trump said. "They have a great ability to produce weapons."

The move represents a significant development for Zelenskyy, who has prioritized obtaining more Patriot missiles. The Ukrainian leader increased his requests after Kyiv failed to intercept any of Russia's high-speed ballistic missiles during an attack earlier this week.

"It's a great idea," Zelenskyy said. "We need it."

Zelenskyy attended the NATO summit following Ukrainian missile and drone strikes on Russian supply routes and occupied Crimea. Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries have caused a nationwide gas-supply shortage in Russia.

"We have a lot of pressure on President Putin," Trump said. "I don't think he likes what's going on. I don't think he's thrilled with what's happening," adding that Ukraine "has been very effective" in their strikes.

Trump held phone calls with both Zelenskyy and Putin over the weekend.

Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, a subsidiary of RTX Corporation, are the primary manufacturers of the Patriot missile defense system.
