Ericsson, AT&T and MediaTek complete 5G mobility trial in North America
Ericsson, AT&T (NYSE: T) and MediaTek have completed what they describe as North America's first in-field trial of Layer 1/Layer 2 Triggered Mobility (LTM), a 5G Advanced feature designed to reduce interruption time during cell handovers, according to a press release issued July 7, 2026.
The trial was conducted on AT&T's network using Ericsson's Radio Access Network technology. During testing, LTM reduced data interruption during cell changes by up to 25% compared to legacy Layer 3 mobility. The companies also claim the feature can reduce handover interruption time by up to 40%.
LTM is part of Ericsson's Low-Latency Mobility feature set, included in its 5G Advanced Critical IoT subscription. Ericsson has been a contributor to LTM's development and standardization within 3GPP.
"This milestone shows how 5G Advanced can translate into a better user experience with truly seamless connectivity needed for extended reality and physical AI," said Mårten Lerner, Head of Networks Strategy & Product Management at Ericsson.
"Our work with Ericsson and MediaTek across AT&T and field trials demonstrates that LTM can improve mobility performance where it counts – on the move – so that customers experience more consistent connections for cloud applications and immersive video conferencing today," said Rob Soni, VP RAN Technology at AT&T.
The feature targets use cases including extended reality, immersive video conferencing, industrial automation, and time-critical communications, where continuous connectivity during device movement is required.
