BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) has won a series of U.S. research and development contracts to develop AI-powered intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities for military customers, according to a company press release.

Under one contract, BlackSky will work to mature automated target recognition capabilities within a customer's classified workflow, using AI-enabled object detection and identification algorithms. A separate effort will advance AI-enabled Battle Damage Detection analytics as part of the company's commercial Gen-3 satellite offering, which is designed to help military decision makers evaluate physical and functional damage to targets during operations.

The contracts call for integrating these capabilities into customers' classified mission environments. BlackSky's Gen-3 satellite constellation delivers 35-centimeter imagery resolution with AI-driven analytics.

"BlackSky's commercial AI capabilities are adding machine speed to our customers' space-based intelligence decision loop, compressing time and increasing the accuracy of strategic and tactical assessments, during live operations," said CEO Brian O'Toole.

Financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed. BlackSky is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia.
