VivoPower studies battery storage addition at Norway data center
VivoPower PLC (NASDAQ: VIVO) said it is conducting a formal technical and commercial feasibility study for integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) at its 41.5 MW Mo i Rana data center in Northern Norway, according to a press release.
The company said the study targets incremental annualized EBITDA of up to approximately $4 million from participation in additional Nordic reserve markets, specifically FCR-N, FCR-D, and FFR grid reserve products. VivoPower said these reserve products are not currently accessible to the site's compute load alone due to endurance, symmetry, and response-speed requirements.
The targeted EBITDA figure is based on capacity payments valued at prevailing 2025–2026 Nordic clearing prices and is subject to prequalification, feasibility outcomes, capital availability, and market conditions.
VivoPower said the proposed BESS design would preserve the site's full 41.5 MW leasable capacity for AI compute tenants. The Mo i Rana site is located in Norway's NO4 bidding zone, where day-ahead power prices averaged approximately $0.009 per kWh in 2025, compared to $0.05–$0.077 per kWh in southern Norway and continental Europe.
The feasibility study will assess electrical headroom at the existing grid connection point, transformer and switchgear capacity, protection coordination, and prequalification pathways with Norwegian transmission system operator Statnett. Any final investment decision remains subject to completion of the study, board approval, tenant consultation, and applicable Norwegian regulatory and grid-connection approvals.
VivoPower said a co-located BESS would also be expected to improve power quality, load-step buffering, and ride-through resilience for AI compute tenants at the facility.
