Teledyne launches space camera via SDL licensing deal
Teledyne Digital Imaging US, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies (NYSE: TDY), has introduced a space-ready camera based on its Emerald 67M CMOS image sensor, enabled by an intellectual property licensing agreement with Space Dynamics Laboratory.
Under the agreement, Teledyne gains rights to commercialize SDL-developed sensor electronics technology, including sensor electronics designs, software, technical data, and related engineering expertise. Teledyne will develop, manufacture, and support products incorporating the technology for government and commercial customers.
The Emerald 67M is a 67-megapixel CMOS sensor designed for high-resolution, fast-acquisition imaging. It features high dynamic range, low noise, and global shutter operation. The sensor is derived from a high-volume industrial platform and can be qualified for space mission requirements including radiation, thermal cycling, and vibration.
Teledyne says the camera is intended for use in space situational awareness, Earth observation, and national security applications.
"This collaboration allows Teledyne to accelerate the development of space imaging products that combine proven electronics technology, high-performance sensors, and U.S.-based manufacturing," said Ravi Guntupalli, General Manager of Teledyne's Scientific Cameras Group.
SDL is a nonprofit corporation headquartered at Utah State University's Innovation Campus in North Logan, Utah, with field offices in several states. "Our responsibility is not only to develop new capabilities, but also to transfer technologies to ensure they can be produced and delivered to the organizations that need them," said Dr. Michael Larsen, SDL Senior Program Manager.
