Allegro MicroSystems launches PMIC with wheel-speed sensor interface
Allegro MicroSystems (Nasdaq: ALGM) has introduced the A81415, a power management IC (PMIC) that the company claims is the first to achieve ASIL-D certification while integrating a wheel-speed sensor interface, according to a press release from the company.
The device targets brake-by-wire system designers and combines an on-chip wheel-speed sensor interface with a buck-boost pre-regulator, five low-dropout regulators, and a single-inductor architecture. The company states this integration eliminates up to nine external components and can reduce semiconductor bill-of-materials costs by up to $4 per vehicle.
The A81415 decodes 2-level, pulse width modulation, and AK protocols without requiring a separate decoder IC. Decoded wheel-speed data is transmitted via a Serial Peripheral Interface, which Allegro says reduces latency in the braking control loop and frees microcontroller bandwidth.
Allegro also states the design frees more than 50% of usable printed circuit board area in corner module applications, where space is constrained by thermal and vibration conditions.
The chip is built on Allegro's automotive grade-0 process and carries AEC-Q100 qualification. When paired with the company's APM81815 pre-regulator and 48V gate drivers, the A81415 is positioned to support both 12V and 48V braking architectures.

The A81415 is being showcased at electronica Shanghai, where Allegro is exhibiting at booth N5.300.
