Cumberland Pharmaceuticals sells branded drug line to Apotex for $100M
Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: CPIX) has closed a $100 million transaction with a subsidiary of Apotex Health Corp. (APTX.TO), under which Apotex acquired Cumberland's line of branded pharmaceuticals, according to a press release dated July 1, 2026.
The deal received approval from Cumberland shareholders, with over 99% of votes cast in favor. The $100 million cash consideration was funded at closing.
Following the transaction, Cumberland, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, will retain its portfolio of product candidates and its majority ownership in Cumberland Emerging Technologies Inc. The company said it will redirect resources toward developing ifetroban, a thromboxane antagonist being studied in four Phase 2 clinical programs targeting rare and progressive diseases.
Those programs include a study in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy cardiomyopathy, which has received FDA Orphan Drug, Rare Pediatric Disease, and Fast Track designations. Cumberland is also evaluating ifetroban in Systemic Sclerosis, with top-line results anticipated, and in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, where enrollment is ongoing. A pilot study conducted in collaboration with Vanderbilt Health found a favorable trend in patients with high-risk solid tumors receiving ifetroban compared to placebo, with fewer deaths from metastatic disease reported.
"This milestone significantly strengthens our financial position, enabling us to focus on the large market opportunities associated with our pipeline programs," said A.J. Kazimi, CEO of Cumberland.
Apotex, headquartered in Toronto, describes itself as the largest Canadian-based pharmaceutical company, with operations spanning generic, biosimilar, and branded pharmaceuticals.
