Klarna pops 6% after crushing Google in $1.97B antitrust verdict
Investing.com -- Klarna Group (NYSE: KLAR) shares jumped 6% on Wednesday following a massive legal victory over Alphabet’s tech monopoly. A Swedish court ruled in favor of Klarna’s subsidiary, PriceRunner, awarding the company a staggering $1.97 billion in antitrust damages.
The high-stakes judgment caps off a fierce battle over online shopping dominance, with the court finding that Google illegally choked out competition by manipulating search results to favor its own comparison-shopping service over independent rivals.
“When markets work well, everyone benefits,” said Dan Greaves, Klarna’s Head of Communications and Policy. “This ruling supports a healthier, more competitive market for the way people compare products and services—and that is good for everyone who shops.”
While the nearly $2 billion headline grabber is a massive win, the underlying asset is where things get interesting for Klarna’s future.
Klarna originally bought PriceRunner back in 2022 to weaponize its product discovery and review capabilities. Since the acquisition, Klarna has aggressively expanded the feature across 13 global markets, building a massive database that boasts over 100 million products and 500 million merchant listings.
That massive data treasure trove isn’t just sitting there; it has become the core engine powering Klarna’s recently launched Shopping Search app inside ChatGPT. More importantly, it forms the backbone of the company’s ambitious "agentic commerce" strategy, turning a traditional "Buy Now, Pay Later" company into an AI-driven retail powerhouse.
