TikTok settles lawsuit over youth mental health claims

Investing.com -- TikTok has reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed by a minor who alleged the platform harmed his mental health, according to a spokesperson for Morgan & Morgan, the law firm representing the plaintiff.

The settlement was agreed upon in principle, but specific terms have not been finalized, the spokesperson said Tuesday.

The case was filed by a 15-year-old Florida boy identified as R.K.C., who named four social media companies as defendants: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat.

According to court filings, R.K.C. began using social media around age eight and developed an addiction that resulted in sleep loss, depression, and anxiety.

YouTube settled its portion of the case in June. Instagram and Snapchat remain scheduled for trial in July in California state court.

The settlement comes before what is expected to be the second trial in California state court examining social media's connection to youth mental health issues.
