Albany engineer authors ASM Handbook chapter on 3D woven composites
Albany Engineered Composites, a segment of Albany International Corp. (NYSE: AIN), announced that Rabih Mansour, Principal Engineer and Technical Fellow, authored a chapter titled "Three-Dimensional Woven Composites" for the ASM Handbook, Volume 21: Composites, a technical reference for materials engineering and manufacturing published by the American Society of Materials.
The chapter covers the evolution of three-dimensional woven composites, weaving architectures, mechanical properties, manufacturing methods and aerospace applications. Mansour also examines how 3D-woven technologies can consolidate multiple components into single integrated structures and support scalable production.
"As aerospace platforms continue to evolve, engineers increasingly require materials delivering both superior performance and production readiness," Mansour said. "Three-dimensional woven composites provide a unique combination of structural efficiency, damage tolerance and design flexibility."
Brent Stevenson, Vice President of Emerging Markets and Technology at Albany Engineered Composites, attributed the authorship to Mansour's technical leadership and the company's work in composite technologies. "Our customers rely on Albany to solve some of the aerospace and defense industry's most complex engineering and manufacturing challenges," Stevenson said.
According to a press release, Albany's 3D-woven structures are used in commercial aerospace, defense, space, rotorcraft and advanced air mobility applications. The company states the technology reduces part count, minimizes mechanical fasteners and lowers overall system weight.
Albany Engineered Composites said it plans to present at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 in Hall 3, Stand 3330. Albany International is headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, operates 25 facilities in 12 countries and employs approximately 5,700 people.
