Trump threatens 100% tariffs over digital services taxes

June 26, 2026 1:33 PM

Investing.com -- President Donald Trump said Friday he would impose 100% tariffs on goods from countries that implement digital services taxes on American companies.

"Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies," Trump wrote on social media Friday. "Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America."

Trump said the tariff would be applied immediately and would override any existing trade agreements with affected countries. The statement comes one day after the European Union completed its approval of a trade agreement with Washington that establishes a 15% tariff ceiling on most of the bloc's exports to the US.

The Trump administration has opposed digital services taxes, arguing they could impact large US technology companies including Alphabet and Meta Platforms. The US has previously warned trading partners, including the EU, about potential retaliation for such taxes. The administration has also called for renewed OECD talks on digital economy taxation this year.

Earlier in June, Trump threatened France with a 100% levy on all champagnes and wines if the country maintained its digital tax.
