Ensysce Biosciences begins final phase of opioid overdose study

Ensysce Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: ENSC) announced the enrollment of the first patient in Part 3 of its PF614-MPAR-102 clinical study, marking the start of the final stage of testing for its Multi-Pill Abuse Resistance (MPAR) overdose-protection technology.

The drug candidate, PF614-MPAR, uses a chemical-control mechanism designed to deliver therapeutic opioid exposure at prescribed doses while restricting additional release when excessive doses are taken. Earlier clinical data showed the compound maintains consistent plasma levels at normal doses while limiting exposure increases at supratherapeutic levels.

Part 3 of the study is intended to further define this protective profile across a broader range of dosing scenarios. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), under Award Number DA047682, is providing funding support for the program.

PF614-MPAR received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration following the earlier PF614-MPAR-101 study. Chief Executive Officer Lynn Kirkpatrick stated, "MPAR represents a new class of chemically engineered opioids designed to actively protect patients, even in situations involving dosing mistakes or misuse."

According to the company's press release, Ensysce is also exploring applications of its MPAR technology in additional therapeutic areas, including amphetamines and methadone, targeting conditions such as ADHD and opioid use disorder.
