Hippo deploys Cognition's AI engineer tool across operations
Hippo Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HIPO) has deployed Devin, an AI software engineer developed by Cognition, across its engineering operations, the company announced June 25.
Devin is designed to handle multi-step development tasks, including planning, writing, and testing code across complex systems. Hippo said it is using the tool across areas including rate filings, underwriting, distribution, and customer experience.
Kyle Ramsay, Hippo's Chief Product and Artificial Intelligence Officer, said the deployment is aimed at managing the complexity of building software that complies with regulatory requirements across all 50 states. "With Devin, we can automate through that complexity instead of around it," Ramsay said.
Hippo said its engineering team is using Devin to accelerate delivery across its operations, including its AI-powered service representative called Hannah, program data ingestion for partner managing general agents, and distribution initiatives.
Jeff Wang, Cognition's President of New Enterprise, said the partnership was a natural fit given the regulatory complexity of the insurance industry.
Cognition describes Devin as capable of planning, coding, testing, and iterating on engineering tasks. Hippo is a technology-focused insurance group whose subsidiaries include Spinnaker Insurance Company, Spinnaker Specialty Insurance Company, and Wingsail Insurance Company.
