York Space Systems completes tactical UHF communications test in orbit
York Space Systems (NYSE: YSS), based in Denver, announced the successful completion of initial mission objectives for its Dragoon program, a demonstration of two-way tactical communications via UHF frequency from low Earth orbit (LEO).
The company completed five demonstrations over a three-month period, including three downlink tests transmitting data to a stationary government ground terminal and two uplink tests sending data from the ground back to the spacecraft. The results confirmed bi-directional UHF connectivity between the satellite and ground-based terminals.
"Two-way connectivity between a satellite and ground forces is operationally essential, and we've now demonstrated it on orbit," said Melanie Preisser, GM and EVP at York. "That opens doors to mission sets that matter deeply to national defense."
According to the company, the Dragoon mission used an inventory spacecraft platform and was delivered to orbit in seven months. York states it maintains an inventory of 20 spacecraft platforms, which it claims enables delivery timescales up to 75% shorter than current mission timelines.
York said the Dragoon mission expands its portfolio to eight unique mission sets. The company also referenced approximately $20 billion in classified mission sets outlined in the Department of War's FY2027 mandatory budget as a market opportunity. Dragoon demonstrations are set to continue for another quarter to test additional capabilities.
