Lockheed Martin unveils next-generation hypersonic glide body
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has announced a new hypersonic glide body weapon system, called the next generation glide body (NXGB), designed to serve as a long-range strike option that can be launched from multiple platforms across multiple warfighting domains.
According to a company statement, NXGB is built with a manufacturing-first approach intended to reduce costs while delivering greater range and velocity compared to current designs. The system is designed to scale production to meet what the company describes as a growing national security need for long-range strike capabilities.
Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager of Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, said the system was designed "to provide greater value to our customers while delivering an operational advantage to the warfighter."
The company states the weapon incorporates technologies and engineering practices drawn from more than six decades of missile development. Lockheed Martin said it has made investments in manufacturing infrastructure and supply chain partnerships to support scaled production of the system.
The program has completed a Preliminary Design Review, which the company says confirms the design meets criteria for performance, producibility, and affordability. A flight demonstration is scheduled for 2027.
