IceCure cites journal article on cryoablation vs. RFA for breast cancer
IceCure Medical Ltd. (NASDAQ: ICCM) highlighted a peer-reviewed article published in the International Journal of Surgery that outlines clinical advantages of cryoablation over radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for early-stage breast cancer.
The article, titled "Thermal Ablation as a Minimally Invasive Alternative to Surgery for Primary Breast Cancer," was authored by Japanese breast cancer specialists Drs. Masato Takahashi, Takayuki Kinoshita, and Eisuke Fukuma. Professor Fukuma, based at Kameda Medical Center in Japan, has performed an estimated 680 breast cancer cryoablation procedures using IceCure's ProSense® system.
The publication notes that cryoablation can be performed under local anesthesia, while RFA requires general anesthesia. It also states that cryoablation allows flexible adjustment of the ice ball size with a visible margin, while RFA is harder to control due to tissue resistance. Data presented at the 2025 Japanese Breast Cancer Society (JBCS) conference by Professor Fukuma showed a 99.02% recurrence-free rate in over 600 patients with follow-up of up to 17 years. The RAFAELO study on RFA cited in the article reported a 98.6% five-year ipsilateral breast tumor-free survival rate in 353 patients.
IceCure is preparing to participate in the 34th Annual Meeting of the JBCS, scheduled for June 25–27, 2026 in Kyoto, Japan. Terumo Corporation, IceCure's exclusive distributor in Japan, is expected to submit ProSense® for regulatory approval to Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency in the second half of 2026.
ProSense® received U.S. Food and Drug Administration marketing authorization for the local treatment of low-risk breast cancer in October 2025, for women aged 70 and above, including patients not suitable for surgical alternatives.
