Iridium launches hybrid IoT module combining satellite and cellular
Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) announced the commercial availability of the Iridium 9604 module and Development Kit, a hybrid IoT device that integrates satellite, cellular, and GNSS connectivity into a single unit.
The module combines Iridium Short Burst Data satellite connectivity, LTE-M cellular, and GNSS positioning in a 16 mm x 26 mm x 2.4 mm form factor. The company states the integrated design reduces board space requirements by 60% or more compared to using separate components. The module supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou GNSS services alongside LTE-M (Cat-M1) and Iridium's L-band satellite network.
Built on the u-blox SARA-R5 platform, the 9604 is designed for applications in industrial, infrastructure, transportation, maritime, utilities, and remote monitoring sectors. The module provides independent control over satellite, LTE-M, and GNSS subsystems through a unified AT command set and SDK resources.
"By replacing three separate components with one integrated solution, developers can simplify device design, reduce costs, and create smarter, location-aware products capable of staying connected far beyond terrestrial coverage," said Tim Last, executive vice president at Iridium.
GPSOne CEO Askar Gabit, who participated in the beta program, said the module "significantly accelerated" the company's development process for a global asset tracking solution.
The 9604 joins Iridium's existing IoT product lineup, which includes dedicated Iridium SBD modules, Iridium NTN Direct direct-to-device capabilities, and the Iridium Certus 9704 module for larger payload connectivity. According to the press release, the 9604 represents an expansion beyond satellite-only hardware toward multi-mode connectivity architectures.
