Instagram expands TV app to Samsung devices, tests new features
Meta's Instagram announced it is expanding its Instagram for TV application to Samsung Smart TVs in the United States, including models from the 2020 model year and newer, according to a company statement.
The expansion means Instagram for TV is now available across Amazon Fire TV, Google TV, and Samsung Smart TVs, which the company says represents the majority of connected TV devices in the US.
Alongside the Samsung rollout, Instagram said it is testing several new features for the TV platform. These include interest-based channels designed to group videos by topic, a casting feature that allows users to send Reels from their phone directly to a TV, Stories playback on the television screen, and a dedicated section for horizontal video content.
Casting is currently available on Google TV and Fire TV, including videos from a user's Saved tab. Samsung TV casting support was not mentioned as part of the initial rollout.
Instagram also said it is exploring additional formats intended for television viewing, including longer-form creator videos, episodic series, and live broadcasts on TV. The company said it aims to begin rolling out these formats soon but did not provide a specific timeline.
The company noted that Instagram for TV launched last year and said it is continuing to develop the product based on community feedback. Instagram said it is working with creators to help shape the direction of the platform's TV experience.
