Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced Halos for Robotics, a safety system for robotics and physical AI, at the Automate conference in Chicago on June 22. The system combines AI compute, system software, sensor data, safety applications and inspection tools under a single architecture.

Agility, a humanoid robotics company whose customers include Amazon, GXO, Schaeffler and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, is the first company to incorporate elements of the system into its proprietary safety architecture. Agility is integrating Nvidia IGX Thor and Halos Core into the safety system for its humanoid robot, Digit, which is used in logistics, manufacturing and warehouse operations.

The system is built around three components. Nvidia IGX Thor and Holoscan Sensor Bridge handle AI compute and sensor connectivity. The Halos OS software stack manages safety functions, including an Outside-In Safety Blueprint that uses external cameras and AI agents to monitor robot behavior. The Nvidia Halos AI Systems Inspection Lab is described as the first program accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board for functional and AI safety for physical AI.

Certification bodies including TÜV Rheinland, UL Solutions, TÜV SÜD, exida, SGS and CertX recognize the inspection lab as part of their certification processes. More than 40 companies across manufacturing, certification and safety are participating in the lab program.

Nvidia said the system draws on what it described as 18,600-plus engineering years of autonomous vehicle safety development. Ecosystem partners include software providers Acontis, FreeRTOS and QNX; embedded systems makers Advantech and NexCobot; and semiconductor companies Infineon, NXP Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments.

Nvidia Halos Core for Nvidia IGX is currently available in early access for registered developers. The open-source Halos Outside-In Safety Blueprint is available in early access on GitHub.
