3M launches AI tool for industrial product and application queries

June 22, 2026 8:11 AM

3M (NYSE: MMM) has launched Ask 3M, an AI-powered digital assistant designed to give industrial customers self-service access to technical product information. The tool is available at ask.3m.com, according to a company press release dated June 22, 2026.

The assistant currently focuses on industrial adhesives and tapes, with responses drawn from verified 3M documentation and application knowledge across the company's 49 technology platforms. Users can ask questions in plain language about topics such as product selection, application methods, and material comparisons. The tool links product suggestions to authorized 3M distributors and allows users to download source documents within the conversation interface.

3M said the tool's answers are grounded in verified internal documentation and validated product knowledge rather than open internet data.

"Our customers rely on 3M for deep application expertise and collaborative problem-solving across a wide range of industries," said Chris Goralski, Group President of 3M's Safety and Industrial Business Group. "Ask 3M extends that expertise in a new way, giving customers faster, more direct access to the information they need to evaluate options and make decisions."

3M said the tool was tested with industrial customers during development. One production engineer used it to identify a solution for bonding polypropylene thermoplastic to insulation foam within a 24-hour cure window. "It took a very basic question and it helped us unfold all the other needs in order to pinpoint a product," the engineer said.

3M said the tool is intended to reduce reliance on time-consuming processes such as site visits and extended email exchanges. The company said it plans to expand Ask 3M into additional product categories over time.
