bioAffinity Technologies reports preclinical siRNA findings for skin cancer
bioAffinity Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: BIAF; BIAFW) has released preclinical findings showing that its small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology selectively killed squamous and basal skin cancer cells in laboratory conditions while leaving non-cancerous skin cells unharmed, according to a company press release.
The in vitro research targets two cell surface receptors, CD320 and LRP2, the silencing of which impaired cancer cell proliferation without observable harm to healthy cells. Microscopic analysis corroborated the cell viability results. The company holds U.S. Patent No. 12,305,171, issued in 2025, covering the underlying compositions and methods.
The findings have not been tested in humans, and no Investigational New Drug application has been filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company noted that preclinical in vitro results may not be predictive of outcomes in human clinical trials.
David J. Elzi, PhD, Vice President of Product Development, will present the research at the 2026 RNA Therapeutics Symposium, scheduled for June 24-26 at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The American Cancer Society estimates approximately 5.4 million cases of squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma are diagnosed annually in the United States. Surgery is the current standard of care, though incomplete resection and recurrence remain clinical challenges. The company stated that no commercial topical siRNA therapy is currently approved specifically for these cancer types.
Earlier research from bioAffinity Technologies showed that siRNA silencing of CD320 and LRP2 impaired cell viability across multiple cancer cell lines in vitro, including lung, breast, prostate, and brain cancers, in addition to skin cancer.
