Momentus wins contract with CU Boulder lab for 2027 satellite mission
Momentus Inc. (NASDAQ: MNTS) has signed a commercial contract with the University of Colorado Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) to host and operate instruments aboard its Vigoride-9 Orbital Service Vehicle (OSV), according to a company statement.
Under the agreement, Momentus will integrate and operate two Occultation Wave Limb Sounder (OWLS) instruments on Vigoride-9, with a targeted launch in 2027. The OWLS mission is designed to measure atmospheric density waves between 100 and 400 kilometers altitude using solar occultation techniques, with the goal of improving models of space weather, atmospheric drag, and the operating environment for satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO).
"Partnering with Momentus allows us to deploy OWLS quickly and efficiently by leveraging its orbital transportation services during the upcoming LEO launch to optimize our latest space weather forecasting instruments," said OWLS Principal Investigator Dr. Ed Thiemann.
Momentus CEO John Rood cited growing demand from commercial customers for orbital hosting and sustained in-orbit operations. The company's Vigoride-7 OSV launched in March and is described as meeting all mission objectives. The Vigoride-8 mission, scheduled for 2027, is fully booked supporting NASA. Momentus said capacity remains available on Vigoride-9.
