Delta Air Lines to install fuel-saving finlets on 240 Boeing 737s
Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) will install aerodynamic finlet modification packages from Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) across its fleet of Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft, covering 240 planes once installation is complete, according to a press release from VCT.
Finlets are devices mounted on the aft fuselage of an aircraft that reduce drag by reshaping airflow and improving pressure distribution, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.
The decision followed a technical collaboration between Delta and VCT that included flight test validation, analysis of operational trends, and engineering review using computational fluid dynamics analysis.
"Equipping these Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER fleets with Finlets represents a significant milestone for VCT," said Gil Morgan, Chief Executive Officer of Vortex Control Technologies.
Delta Chief Sustainability Officer Amelia DeLuca said the airline seeks partners that enhance performance and reduce environmental impact. "We are looking forward to this implementation to further support our ongoing fleet efficiency initiatives," she said.
According to the press release, approximately 90% of Delta's carbon emissions originate from jet fuel consumption. VCT, headquartered in Seattle, states its technologies have saved tens of millions of gallons of jet fuel and prevented over 100,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions across its existing customer base.
