NuScale awards Paragon contract for SMR protection system design
NuScale Power Corporation (NYSE: SMR) has awarded a contract to Paragon, a subsidiary of Mirion Technologies, to complete final design development of Paragon's Highly Integrated Protection System (HIPS) for the NuScale Power Module.
Under the contract, Paragon will complete non-recurring engineering and design work for three instrumentation and control systems: the Module Protection System, a nuclear safety-related reactor protection system; the Safety Data Interface System, a post-accident monitoring system; and the Plant Protection System, which handles control room habitability functions. The contract also includes Independent Verification and Validation services for software development.
NuScale's small modular reactor (SMR) design is the first to receive approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The company already has certain components of 12 power modules in production. Each NuScale Power Module is capable of generating up to 77 megawatts of electricity, with plants designed to support up to 12 modules per common control room.
