Whiplash: Lionsgate stock tumbles as Netflix denies takeover plans
Investing.com -- Lionsgate Studios (NYSE: LION) shares fell 5% in after-hours trading Tuesday, swiftly deflating a massive regular-session rally after conflicting reports thoroughly cooled speculation of a blockbuster takeover by Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX).
The stock had surged 13.85% to close at $16.37 during regular trading hours on the heels of a Semafor report naming Netflix among several media heavyweights eyeing the independent studio. The optimism was short-lived, however, as The Wrap subsequently reported that a source familiar with the matter states Netflix has absolutely no plans to pursue Lionsgate.
The rapid reversal underscores the hyper-volatile nature of the current media landscape, which has entered a chaotic period of consolidation. The initial Semafor report had noted that while Netflix was "interested," it had not yet submitted a formal indication of interest.
The report also detailed Netflix’s recent string of M&A activity, including a quiet exit from preliminary due diligence for Roku, which was ultimately snapped up by Fox Corp. in a massive $22 billion deal. In a bid to clarify its strategy, a Netflix spokesperson told The Wrap it "did not make a bid" for Roku—signaling a corporate commitment to price discipline.
Despite Netflix’s reported lack of interest, Wall Street remains highly focused on Lionsgate as a prime acquisition target. The studio has faced persistent pressure from activist investors, like Anson Funds, to explore an outright sale following its corporate spin-off from the Starz premium network.
For now, the after-hours drop has erased nearly all of Tuesday’s regular-session gains. While Netflix appears content to sit on the sidelines and focus on organic content spend, the broader industry consolidation wave—headlined by Fox’s pending Roku purchase and Paramount’s pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery—means Lionsgate will likely remain a centerpiece of media takeover speculation.
Representatives for Lionsgate declined to comment on the rumors.
