Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon Reality Elite platform for XR devices
Qualcomm Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) announced the Snapdragon Reality Elite Platform at the Augmented World Expo, a chipset designed to power extended reality (XR) headsets and glasses across video see-through and optical see-through form factors.
The platform is built to deliver up to 48 TOPS of on-device AI performance, supporting large language and vision models. Qualcomm claims the chip offers up to 60% higher GPU performance, up to 30% higher CPU performance, and up to 160% higher NPU performance compared to a prior generation. The platform also supports visuals up to 4.4K per eye at 90 frames per second.
Qualcomm said the platform delivers up to 20% longer battery life at equivalent workloads and operates up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler under load, compared to the prior generation.
Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of XR, Wearables and Personal AI at Qualcomm, cited more than 60 million XR devices already in the market and said demand is increasing for higher-performance and more power-efficient XR technologies.
XREAL and Play for Dream are among the first device makers confirmed to use the platform. XREAL's Project Aura, described as optical see-through XR glasses, is scheduled to launch later this year. Play for Dream also announced an upcoming device based on the platform, with additional products expected to follow.
The platform is compatible with Android XR and is intended to serve as a foundation for a range of headsets and glasses from multiple manufacturers.
