Global Ship Lease orders 10 containerships for $917 million
Global Ship Lease Inc. (NYSE: GSL) announced it has agreed to individual newbuilding contracts for 10 containerships with an aggregate purchase price of approximately $917 million, according to a company statement.
The vessels are described as mid-size, ultra-high-reefer, wide-beam, latest-generation containerships with deliveries scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2028 and first quarter of 2030. The contracts are subject to certain conditions precedent being met.
The company has secured multi-year charters for all 10 vessels upon delivery, with a TEU-weighted average term of 6.7 years. The charters are expected to generate aggregate Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $665 million over their respective charter terms.
"We are pleased to have agreed attractive terms for these best-in-class vessels, which we expect to be the workhorses of global container shipping for many years to come," said George Youroukos, Executive Chairman of Global Ship Lease.
The Athens-based containership owner and lessor operates a fleet of 71 vessels as of March 31, 2026, with an average age weighted by TEU capacity of 18.2 years. The company reported contracted revenue of $2.05 billion as of March 31, 2026, representing an average remaining charter term of 2.6 years on a TEU-weighted basis.
Global Ship Lease, incorporated in the Marshall Islands, commenced operations in December 2007 and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since August 2008.
