BHP signs rail deals with CN and CPKC for Jansen potash transport
BHP Canada Inc has signed transportation agreements with Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City to move potash from its Jansen mine to export terminals in Vancouver, according to a company statement.
The agreements establish dual rail access for the Jansen Potash Mine through a dedicated spur line connecting to both CN and CPKC mainlines. Both carriers will operate unit trains between the Saskatchewan mine and Westshore Terminals in Vancouver.
The initial contracts run for approximately four years to support Jansen Stage 1 production, with future arrangements planned for subsequent project phases. BHP expects first production from Jansen by mid-2027.
"Securing rail transportation with both CN and CPKC strengthens the reliability of our supply chain and ensures we are well positioned to deliver Saskatchewan potash to global customers," said Karina Gistelinck, Asset President Potash at BHP.
CN Executive Vice-President Janet Drysdale called the Jansen project "a generational investment in Saskatchewan and a significant opportunity for Canada's export economy." CPKC President Keith Creel noted the company's position as a leading potash shipper in North America.
The dual-access model aims to provide supply chain reliability and flexibility for delivering product to international markets. BHP is a subsidiary of BHP Group Limited, which operates mining assets globally and employs approximately 90,000 people.
