Instacart launches AI-powered shopping carts at Weis Markets stores

June 4, 2026 9:04 AM

Instacart (NASDAQ: CART) and Weis Markets announced the launch of Caper Carts at select Weis locations in Pennsylvania, with additional rollouts planned throughout the year. The AI-powered shopping carts provide real-time spend tracking, personalized coupons, and loyalty rewards integration.

The carts are equipped with basket-facing cameras, weight-certified scales, location-tracking systems, and touchscreens. Customers can track spending in real time, access location-based digital deals, and sign up for Weis Rewards accounts directly on the cart. Loyalty members can redeem benefits and access features like "Buy It Again," which displays previously purchased items.

"From real-time spend tracking to on-cart coupons that make saving effortless, this technology offers our customers a convenient and frictionless shopping experience," said Greg Zeh, SVP and Chief Information Officer at Weis Markets.

Weis will also implement on-cart advertising opportunities for brands. Features like the "Got everything you need?" prompt have shown an average increase of nearly one percentage point in basket size, according to the company.

The technology combines edge computing with cloud AI trained on more than 1.6 billion online grocery orders. Instacart states the system provides retailers with increased sales, reduced out-of-stocks, and retail media revenue while offering customers personalized shopping experiences.

Weis Markets joined the Instacart Marketplace in 2023. The grocery chain operates 197 stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Caper Carts are now available in more than 100 cities across 15 states and operate across more than a dozen retail banners, including Kroger, Schnucks, and Wakefern banners. Instacart has tripled its Caper Cart deployment year-over-year.
