Planet Labs receives $22 million NGA contract extension for maritime surveillance
Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) announced two contract awards from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency through its subsidiary Planet Labs Federal, Inc., according to a company press release.
The NGA exercised the first option year under the Luno B Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity contract for Advanced Analytics for Maritime Operations and Reconnaissance. This one-year extension is valued at $22 million and continues the company's Maritime Domain Awareness services across multiple Combatant Commands.
Under the extended contract, Planet will provide automated detection of maritime events, including ship-to-ship transfers and "dark" fleet activity. The company uses AI-enabled analytics with its PlanetScope satellite constellation to deliver these services.
Planet also received a separate contract from NGA, in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit, for its Global Monitoring Service to support crisis response efforts. This contract provides near-daily change detection and situational awareness using high-frequency, low-latency satellite imagery.
The Global Monitoring Service utilizes Planet's SuperDove constellation and AI-enabled analytics to deliver automated insights to NGA and DIU analysts, often within hours of data collection.
"Commercial imagery underscores a fundamental shift in the intelligence paradigm," said Jon Powers, Planet VP, Global Defense & Intelligence. "These solutions bridge the 'last mile' between raw data and actionable intelligence."
Planet operates what it describes as the largest Earth observation fleet of imaging satellites, providing daily global satellite imagery and geospatial solutions to agriculture, forestry, intelligence, education, finance companies and government agencies.
