Clean Energy starts renewable natural gas production at Idaho dairy

June 4, 2026 6:30 AM

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) has begun producing renewable natural gas at its eighth dairy facility in Jerome, Idaho. The East Valley Cattle operation houses over 35,000 cows and represents one of the largest single-site dairies and RNG facilities in North America.

The facility uses six anaerobic digesters to capture methane from cow manure and processes over 5 million gallons of manure daily. The system prevents methane emissions from entering the atmosphere and produces pipeline-quality RNG for transportation fuel use across the country.

The East Valley project recognized its first revenue in the first quarter of 2026. The RNG produced at the facility has received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to generate Renewable Identification Numbers under the Renewable Fuel Standard program and from the California Air Resources Board to generate California Low Carbon Fuel Standard credits.

"This is probably the most ambitious project we've taken on – the scale, the technology, and the integration of systems are unmatched," said Will Flanagan, Vice President of Strategic Development at Clean Energy.

The project has been financed through CE bp Renew Co, Clean Energy's joint venture with bp. The facility processes manure using municipality-scale wastewater treatment systems and advanced separation technology before anaerobic digestion. Byproducts are reused on-site for livestock bedding and crop fertilizer.

According to EPA data cited in the company's statement, agriculture accounts for nearly 10 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions while transportation accounts for 28 percent. The company states that RNG can achieve negative carbon-intensity scores based on emission reductions at the source and vehicle use.
