Mayo Clinic and Microsoft partner to develop healthcare AI model

June 2, 2026 3:02 PM

Mayo Clinic and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced a strategic collaboration to develop a frontier AI model designed for healthcare applications, according to a press release statement.

The partnership combines Mayo Clinic's clinical expertise and de-identified health data with Microsoft's AI and cloud capabilities. The organizations are developing an AI model intended to support clinical reasoning and various healthcare use cases.

The model will be designed to analyze clinical data to support diagnoses, treatment decisions and patient outcomes. Mayo Clinic will own the frontier AI model, while Microsoft plans to make it available through Azure Foundry APIs for global access.

"Mayo Clinic is committed to putting patients first, and we have long believed AI can help transform healthcare," said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. The organization launched Mayo Clinic Platform seven years ago to advance healthcare innovation through data.

The model will initially be deployed within Mayo Clinic's clinical environment for testing and refinement. Unlike general-purpose AI models, the healthcare-specific model requires clinical context, longitudinal understanding and real-world validation.

"Frontier medical intelligence is around the corner," said Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI. "Mayo has unparalleled clinical expertise, de-identified clinical health data and longitudinal medical insights."

Mayo Clinic operates as a nonprofit organization focused on clinical practice, education and research. Microsoft develops AI-powered platforms and tools for various applications across industries.
